The Early Renaissance

The Early Renaissance

There are several time periods and religions that make up our history leading up to The Early Renaissance. It began with Christianity, Islam, The Middle Ages and finally the Renaissance. I learned many aspects of the time Before the Renaissance and The early Renaissance from the text as well as from the crash course videos. I learned from the videos that Jesus was born Jewish and was considered to be the Messiah and Son of God. Jesus was spreading the word of god and his ideas were about giving and appealed to the poor, not the rich and powerful. This ended up making him a threat to the Roman leaders and therefore he was executed by crucifixion. I also learned, In Islam there religion and political beliefs followed the same ideals and there was never any divide between the two. Also, The five pillars of Islam are the testimony of faith, prayer, supporting the needy, fasting the month of Ramadan, The pilgrimage to Makkah. Lastly,  The Middle Ages dated from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the 14th century. The Middle Ages is seen as the time period that connects the world of Rome. The Renaissance is seen as the rebirth of European culture after the Dark Ages. The Renaissance was seen as a time that re-enlighten people and now is the center of Art, Commerce and History in our world. The Renaissance took much inspiration from The Greek and Romans, when it comes to Literature, Architecture and Philosophies. The topics I learned from the videos rather than the text taught me a more in depth perspective on the time period. It gave me new thoughts and concepts that I did not know or think of when reading.

I feel like the text gives a lot of good information about Before the Renaissance as well as The Early Renaissance. However, I feel that is gives much surface level information that is very standard and direct. The texts taught me things like,  Christianity started in the first century and The Hebrews originally worshipped many different gods. Eventually they started believing in monotheism, or the worship of one god. Jesus began spreading his word of god and attracted a small but loyal group of followers. Jesus spread love and peace and was said to perform miracles. The religion of Islam began when Angel Gabrielle appeared to Mohammad and told him to begin reciting the word of God. Muslims believe that God sent Mohammad as the final profit to bring the people back to believing in one all mighty God. The Justinian Reign was from the fall of the Western Roman Empire but was soon taken over by the Romans, In the Early Middle Ages. Holy Roman Emperors had the crown for many more years to come in the Middle Ages. The Roman Germanic lands slow began to divide and then started the Great Schism, this is known as the High Middle Ages. Then the divide was made between the Roman Church and Eastern Orthodox church. In the late Middle Ages, Europe experienced the Black Death Pelage and the Hundred Years War. The videos gave me more information to expand off the basic knowledge the text taught me. The videos introduced new ideas that branched off my previous understanding of these topics. You need both the text and videos for a full, well rounded view of the Renaissance.
