Rubens art work is always filled with movement, like this painting of a mortal women, the divine riders and even the horses are drawn into a single pulsating spiral. The Journey of Marie de' Medici painting was created from the years 1622 to 1625 and was created in Paris, France. This painting was funded by Marie de' Medici, the widow of Henry IV and was created for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, France. Rubens was a part of a huge project to decorate this palace with paintings of Marie and her life.
Nearly all the works of art in this palace were of her or mythical characters from Greek or Roman times. The Journey of Marie de' Medici painting is one of the many paintings in the Medici cycle. This painting shows the life of Marie and how she is Queen of France and widow to King Henry VIII. This painting shows her strength in fighting for her kingdom and how she leads her country with grace and power. Marie is shown riding a mighty steed next to beautiful angels. This displays her balance of beauty and strength.
