In 1520 Pope Leo X condemned Luther because of his teachings and by 1521 he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. At this time the Reformation had begun. Luther began to apply his reformation in churches all over Germany. After this reformation movements began to spread over most of Europe. By 1523 more and more reformers were spreading and advocating a christianity free world. The reason the Reformation even started was because of the corrupt and unjust system they had in place.  There were many aspects that did lead to the Reformation.

It started with the rising sense of nationalism in Europe. People began to resent religious and political power in these countries at this time. Several huge activists for a Reformation were, Luther as I mentioned, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Thomas More in England and Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples in france. Luther’s beliefs attracted people because of his personal conversion and rejection of the strict Catholic church. Many, if not most of the reformers were in fact not professional humanists.

Even though this is true many of the reformers and humanists have similar beliefs and goals during the Renaissance. These two movements did have there differences but they both were very critical of the decadent character of popular devotion to the saints, the low intellectual preparation of the clergy and the general venality and corruption of the church power. The Reformation had many outcomes from it, including a huge impact of the developing arts. The Reformation emphasized sin and the need for prayer was reflected in the art during this time period. The Renaissance was known for being one of the most influential times for art, especially in Europe. The religious battles of the Reformation were have said to majorly impact the art and it was said to have been the time of the highest art achievements. Both Matthias Grunewald and Albrecht Durer were both highly influential painters a this time and had a great impact on the Renaissance and The Reformation.
